Stations of the Cross. Pray. I. II. III. IV. V. VI. VII. VIII. IX. X. XI. XII. XIII. XIV. Final prayer. Parish Church of St Francis of Assisi Church of England Petts Wood
The Stations of the Cross (so-called because we stop and stand before representations of different moments of Jesus’ way to His death) have a Franciscan origin.  St Francis of Assisi told his followers that all the lessons about prayer they would ever need could be found in the Cross of Christ.  From this there grew up the custom meditation and prayer focused on the fourteen moments in the passion and death of Jesus.

The prayerful calling to mind of the Way of the Cross can be a great help to us in our difficulties and hardships, as well as keeping our feet on the ground when everything seems to be going well.  They help us remember that the disciple follows in the way of the teacher, without being greater than the teacher.

The stations at St Francis were carved especially for St Francis Church.  They are shown here with appropriate Bible passages to help you make your own way of the cross. It is suggested that at each station you read the title of the station, then say the prayer “We adore you and bless you”  Now take time to look at the image and read through the passage of Scripture slowly.  Think about what the station meant to Jesus, or those who were there, or how it is again played out in our world.  Finish the station with perhaps the Lord’s Prayer, or one or more of the following prayers.
