Annointing of the Sick

Angel in St FrancisIn the Letter of St James, those who are sick are advised to call for a priest to pray over them and anoint them with oil. It is appropriate to receive this sacrament when seriously ill, facing a major operation or experiencing the difficulties of old age. You may be anointed more than once, especially in the case of a worsening illness or when death is likely.
The sacrament consists in a priest anointing the head and hands of the sick person while saying prayers.
The anointing helps the sick person come closer to Christ, gives them strength in the face of continuing illness or imminent death, brings forgiveness of sins and, if it be God’s will, physical healing.
